Parking

Visitor car parks are managed through Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR).

When parking in the North and West car parks, patients and visitors can choose to pay at a pay machine using cash or card, or pay on exit of the car park using contactless payment.

Brunel Treatment Centre (BTC)

The Brunel Treatment Centre is a pay and display car park.

The parking machine only accepts coins.

Please pay for your ticket using the pay machines before exiting the car park.

Swindon Intermediate Care Centre (SwICC)

There are a number of disabled parking spaces outside of SwICC, all other patients and visitors should use one of the visitor car parks.

Charges

Charges apply for parking at Great Western Hospital.

Ways to pay

Pay machines accept coins or debit/credit cards.

Lost tickets

Lost or damaged tickets will be charged at the 6-24 hours daytime tariff rate (please see above).

Concessions

Concessionary passes, which reduce the cost of any stay in the car park, can be issued when:

  • Patients attend hospital for on-going treatment more than once in a single week or on multiple weeks in a single month
  • Friends, family or carers are visiting a patient whose condition is very serious or life-threatening
  • Patients and visitors have had their hospital stay delayed longer than could have reasonably been expected
  • Carers and support workers are required to attend the site to help and support patients during their stay in hospital

Free barrier passes may be issued in the following circumstances:

  • Patients, visitors, supporters or carers who arrive in emergency circumstances without money to cover parking charges
  • Patients whose treatment is not NHS-funded and whose insurer has an agreement with The Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust that free parking for their client will be provided
  • Outpatients who attend hospital for an appointment at least three times within a month and for an overall period of at least three months.

A 'month' is defined as a period of 30 days.

If you think you may be eligible for parking concessions, please speak to a member of staff on the ward/department you are visiting for further information.

Disabled parking

Patient and visitor disabled parking spaces are provided close to the entrances of all buildings on the hospital site.

Blue Badge holders are also allowed to use parent and child parking spaces.

Disabled parking spaces are not barrier-controlled, and users must display a valid Blue Badge and clock displaying time of arrival at all times.

Charges and maximum stay

There is no charge for parking in these areas, however you will need to validate your parking at one of the pay-on-foot machines.

Enter your vehicle registration at one of these machines, press continue and a fee will appear on screen. Scan the barcode on the back of your blue badge, then this fee will be waived so you are able to exit the car park for free.

Blue badge holders are also able to scan the barcode on their badge at the exit barrier, and the barrier will lift free of charge.

There is a three-hour maximum stay parking restriction in place, which helps us to maximise the disabled spaces available to patient and visitors.

We are aware that, on occasions, appointments/duration of stay can exceed the three hours; in these circumstances, please give your car registration details to a member of staff in the department/ward you are visiting, and they will make special arrangements with the car parking team - this can be done prior to your visit if you expect to have a long appointment at the hospital.

If you need a wider space for access requirements, please wait within the disabled area for a space to become available.

Parking attendants are also on site to offer their support.

Violations and appeals

When visiting the hospital, please park with other users in mind.

Please ensure you park within a designated space (depicted with white lines) within a car park.

Please don't leave your vehicle in a place that may cause obstruction or access for other users.

Parking attendants patrol the site and will issue Parking Charge Notices (PCN's) for any parking violations on site.

Appeals

If you receive a Parking Charge Notice and consider it to have been issued in error, you can appeal through the contractor providing this service - please see www.appeals.sabaparking.co.uk

Where the money from hospital parking goes

Income generated from parking fees is invested back into the maintenance of the car park including lighting, signage, security, and staffing.

The income is also used to fund improvements such as car park expansions and additional spaces. Remaining income is invested directly into patient services.

Without charging visitors and staff for bringing their vehicle on site, the cost of providing parking facilities would need to be funded directly from the Trust, diverting much needed funds away from patient services.
