Where to give birth

Where you have your baby is your choice, and you will be supported in this choice.

In Swindon, options include:

Home birth

If you have a straightforward pregnancy, and both you and the baby are well, you might choose to give birth at home.

Your midwife will discuss this option with you and answer any questions.

Please ask your midwife about the Home Birth Support Group.

Delivery Suite

The Delivery Suite provides care for women with more complex pregnancies who may require additional monitoring in labour or additional care immediately after birth.

It is a modern clinical environment with electronic delivery beds and a large birthing pool for water births or to use during labour.

Visiting times

Two birthing partners are allowed with you while in the Delivery Suite.

All other visiting is restricted and is at the discretion of your midwife and the Delivery Suite Co-ordinator.

The Delivery Suite is not a suitable environment for children and children will only be allowed to enter in exceptional circumstances.

  • Partners and children (of women giving birth): 9am-9pm
  • All other visitors: 2.30pm-4.30pm and 6pm-8pm

White Horse Birth Centre Manager

Your midwife will explain your birthing options and answer any questions you have. They will support you to prepare a birth plan which reflects your individual needs and wishes.

Not all women are able to give birth where they planned or hoped for. For example, some women may need to be transferred to the Delivery Suite during labour if there are concerns about them or their baby, so that extra care is on hand if needed.

Safety and security

Keeping your baby safe is extremely important to us.

We operate an intercom system to manage access to all areas and use electronic tagging for security in the Delivery Suite and Hazel Ward.

An electronic tag will be placed your babies ankle and an alarm will sound if the baby is near any ward exit.

Visitors must know the full name of the person they are visiting, otherwise access may be denied.
